The oldest was 5 years old.
We got a message from one of the children's mothers:
" I got home this evening and I am met
with Oaky and the sun, waiting to be read. I proceed to read, I still have my
bag on my shoulder. Gosh!
This is her story, "mummy, two uncles came to my creche and read us a story and gave us the book, we All got a book to bring home. Up here said the sun, up here"
Thank you again. "

Such a wonderful letter. It warms my heart to hear how READ to RISE is impacting the lives of children.

Thank you letter from Mandalay Primary School
Dear Madam
I herewith wish to express our heartfelt thanks and
appreciation on behalf of our learners for the selfless efforts of your volunteers
in organising books for our learners.
We would like to salute Read-to-Rise for their exciting initiative to make quality books
available to young readers which in turn will encourage them to read.
This is a wonderful example of the spirit of Ubuntu- commendable!
Our learners thoroughly enjoyed reading the books. We
trust that their levels in Literacy and Numeracy will improve.
Mandalay Primary School would like to say, THANK YOU,

Our Chairman, Athol Williams, honored for his contribution to Mitchells Plain
On 4 November 2013, our READ to RISE Chairman, Athol Williams, was honored for his contribution to Mitchells Plain in South Africa.
He was named as one of the local heroes at a ceremony in Lentegeur. We are very proud of Athol! You inspire us to give back and do more for those in need.
Athol (who grew up in Westridge) started Taurus School Solutions (who help improve school performance at schools in Mitchells Plain) and Doing Great Things (which is an organization to promote individuals and organisations doing great things for their communities). The READ to RISE initiative is supported by Doing Great Things and Taurus School Solutions.

Our great volunteer readers from Taurus School Solutions, Kevin, Mike and Roscoe visited Beacon View Primary School on 7 November 2013 to distribute over 400 copies of OAKY AND THE SUN to five Grade 2 classes and five Grade 3 classes.
Mike and Kevin, who are former teachers, really are great with the young learners.
The children just loved their books! and the best thing is that they can take them home :)
I love seeing our book in the hands of smiling children :)

Visit to Mandalay Primary School... 6 November 2013
Our wonderful volunteer readers, Rene and Mike, visited Mandalay Primary School on Wednesday 6 November 2013 to distribute 324 copies of OAKY AND THE SUN to the Grade 2 and 3 learners. There were four Grade 2 classes and four Grade 3 classes.
Thank you Mike and Rene for making a difference in these children's lives! Hopefully we have inspired them to read.
This is what Mike shared with us, "One teacher told me that this is only time in her class that they have all had copies of the same book..".
So heartbreaking to hear this....... but hopefully this will be a day that the children will not forget and that they will be inspired to read and rise! :)
